Supervision provides a space where coaches can press the pause button, reflect deeply and make new sense of their coaching experience and their client relationships, before returning to the frontline better equipped to serve their clients. Two of the most important outputs of supervision are the continued professional development of the coach, and the nurturing of productive, safe and ethical client relationships.

The relationship between coach and coach-supervisor provides the following important ingredients:

A space to explore live challenges and client issues in depth with a professional peer in an atmosphere of confidentiality and openness
An environment where unconscious aspects of the coach’s client relationships are subtly revealed, for example through parallel process, providing a crucial source of insight
An opportunity for the coach to deepen understanding of her/his coaching practice, and of the unique value she/he brings to clients

The EMCC recommends that coaches and mentors should undertake no less than 1 hour of supervision per 35 hours of practice, ensuring a minimum of 4 hours per year, evenly distributed if possible.
Peter Young has a Diploma in Coach Supervision from CSA (Coach Supervision Academy) and provides supervision both to independent coaches and groups of internal organisational coaches.
